There was a staff of women, called matrons, who provides various types of personal care including help with toileting and changing diapers. Between ages 5 and 9 I was changed by about four or five different matrons; at about age 9 I began changing myself. For the most part the matrons were pleasant with me when I needed to be changed. There were many kids with spina bifida so I wasn't the only one in diapers who had to be changed. However, when I was 9 one matron was very harsh with me because I had pooped myself and afterwards my mother thought it was time for me to change myself.

I was 10 and hadn't been changing myself for very long (maybe 6 months). One morning, before the drill (which was unanounced) I went to the boys' bathroom to get changed. The drill began right afterwards and while the kids in the hallway didn't have to fear an A-bomb, they did have to fear the bomb I dropped in my diaper. I had a massive bowel movement (BM) that stunk up the bathroom and the entire hallway where everyone was assembled for the drill. It was always bad enough when I messed myself, but with everyone in the hallway, they couldn't escape to odor. I had a real hard time cleaning everything up and it seemed to take for ever. Mike P	56	There were only cloth diapers when I was in school. I brought a clear plastic bag (like a produce bag from the supermarket) to school every day along with my clean diapers. My plastic bag and my diapers were kept in my school bag which was kept in the boys' bathroom throughout the school day. When I changed myself, after putting on a new diaper and fixing my rubber pants and clothes, I'd roll my wet (or dirty) diaper into a tight ball and put the "balled-up" diaper into my plastic bag. When I got home my mother would empty the plastic bag into the diaper pail that as kept in the bathroom at home. My mother would rinse out the plastic bag with water so I could use it for several days.
