Up until age 9 I was completely dependent on others (parents and other family adults and personal caregivers at school) to take care of my bathroom needs (changing me, cleaning me up after my BM accidents, etc). To a large extent I was unable to take care of myself (I'm paralyzed from my waist down) and needed help in this area. When I was nine I began changing myself.`

DiaperDon	40	When I was little, noone ever thought that I should have any control, and I probably wasn't responsible enough or capable of doing it. When I was old enough to take care of it (and I had pull-on style training pants that were easier), I did my own changing most of the time. Then the only control I didn't have was what type of diaper to wear, because I only had 1 type. There was 1 time that I spent the night with my cousins (who were also nighttime diaper wearers) and my aunt told me exactly what I must wear, and stood and watched me put them on. I was very embarrassed. When traveling, my Mom would sometimes buy disposable diapers for me so that she wouldn't have to worry about laundry and care of the used cloth diapers. I couldn't change myself, and had no control over the situation. Mom made me lay down in front of the whole family and changed my diaper. When I was older I learned to change my own disposables, but when I was younger I had no options.
soaker	45	My mother treated me like a baby because I wet myself so often. She and my sisters would pull the waist band of my shorts down to check my plastic pants for a wet diaper in front of anyone any were. My younger sister did a "diaper check" in front of two of her girl friends by pulling my shorts down to my knees exposing my soaked diaper swimming in my plastic pants. My mother told her and the girls to change me before I leaked all over.
kodi	--	I had enough control to get by. For exampile I can control how I use my diapers and what I were but I do not have control of who changes me and I dont relly care who does anyway.

Mike P.	60	At home I was changed mostly by my mother usually in the bathroom but sometimes on my bed. In the 50's and 60's there were just cloth diapers and my mother decided what diapers to use. Sometimes my brother or sister were in the bathroom when I was being changed but as I got older I had more privacy. I went to a school for disabled kids and everyone used the same bathrooms. So the kids with spina bifida were changed in front of other kids going to the bathroom at the same time.I only had privacy in high school when I began using a boys' bathroom that was infrequently used (because of its location) throughout the school day.
Mark	14	My 2 brothers (ages 12 and 17 right now) thought it was funny that I was still in diapers at a high age, so they treated me like a baby sometimes. Obviously, some people at school treated me that way, too. Believe it or not, there were a couple people my age still in diapers, and I still know them today. We all had control over our diaper wearing with each other.
Jon	16	I have little control over who changes me. I do not change myself so I have to rely on however is around to change me. My parents do take my input on babysitters and others assigned to change my diapers.
soaker	45	When I was 13 my mother and I had just arrived at a friend of hers house when she ask me if I had a wet diaper yet. This was infront of the friend and 10 other females that were there for a Tupperwear party. I was very embarresed as all eyes/ears listen to me say Yes. My mother then said as she pulled down my shorts are wet enought for a change. All could see I was soaked and had also messed my diaper. She took off my shorts and took me and my diaper bag to the bathroom for a change. This was 1 of 3 more changes that day of shame.
kodi	--	I was seen by anyone when I wore my diapers but I dident care relly. As for my changer it was any adult figure around at the time when I need To be Changed.

soaker	--	I had no say as to how I was diapered until I was 15 years old. My mother and sisters would always make sure I was diapered with more than enought protection to prevent any leaks. They were less concerened about if anyone could tell if I had diapers on. The bulk between my legs and the roundness of the front of my shorts and pants told everyone I was wearing diapers.
Mike P.	60	Because I'm incontinent I had to wear diapers all of the time. Not being in diapers was never a possibility for me.

Mark	14	Sometimes when I needed a diaper change, my parents and brothers would be too busy to change me then, so I had to be in a soiled diaper for a while
Jon	16	Since my parents bought my diapers they would decided what to buy. They do let me give input and often buy what I like.
DiaperDon	40	The only diapers I had were the Cloth Pull-On variety, and Gerber Plastic Pants. I had no way of choosing other types, because that is all I had. I guess that means Mom was in control of that aspect of my diapering. Everything else was usually up to me (except on rare occasions as noted above).

soaker	--	I was always diapered on trips in the car over 1 1/2 hour. Once I was about 12 and I was in the car with a friend of my mothers and her 13 year old twin daughters I had wet the diapers I was wearing twice and was now in need to take a BM. I ask my mother if we could stop but she said that there was no place for another hour or more. My mother told me to use my already wet diapers and she would change me when we stoped. I held it for as long as I could but the twins were laughting as I messed my diapers. My mother told me to remove my shorts just incase any poop got past my diapers & plastic pants (plastis seat covers).
Allen	18	I am considered to be the baby of the family and must wear diapers fulltime. As any baby in diapers, I wet and mess when I need to. No choice as in where else to pee or poopie.
Mike P.	60	Until I began changing myself, my parents and caregivers at school pretty much determined when I was to get changed. At home my mother was pretty conscientious about taking care of me and I could always tell her if I needed to go when I knew that I had messed myself. At school I was also changed on a pretty regular schedule that fitted into to the other school day activities (usually after arrival, before dismissal and before and after lunch). After I began changing myself I pretty much followed that schedule on my own until high school.

Mark	14	Most of the time I went in my diapers when I decided to, but every now and then my body would empty my bladder and bowels on its own. This still happens today sometimes.
Jon	16	Since I have been wearing diapers 24/7 I have no control over when I pee in my diaper. I still can control when I poop. Sometimes I like to poop in the toilet and will request that my diapers be removed for this. Often my diaper is removed when requested for pooping, but if my diaper changer is busy sometimes they just tell me to go in my diaper. Also, I often get changed if I request a change but may have to wait if no one wants to change me at that time.

Describe how your mother and/or father had control over the handling of your diaper-wearing. How did you feel about the ways they handled these areas and how they responded to your concerns?

		Over time I had more privacy in the bathroom at home, although it was never a big deal if my brother or sister were in the bathroom at the same time. My parents understood my disability and at the time diapers were the only way of managing my incontinence issues.

Mark	14	They treated me like a big baby, especially during changes. Now I sometimes change myself, and since I am older, I am not treated like a baby anymore by my parents.
Jon	16	They are cooperative and listen to my input.

Describe how your sisters had control over the handling of your diaper-wearing. How did you feel about the ways they handled these areas and how they responded to your concerns?

Allen	18	My younger sister is my primary diaper changer, I share a room with her and she changes my dirty diapers in the morning, diapers me for bed at night, anytime I'm stinky. She decided if I am to be single or double diapered, what kind of plastic panties I am to wear , what I wear for clothing during the day , what kind of jammies i wear to bed.

Allen	18	My older younger brother is considered to be a big boy because he doesn't wear diapers, so he is allowed to spank me when he thinks I have been naughty or when I have a poopy diaper. And he loves to change my diaper in front of his friends to show that he is the older dominant brother and I am what I am, a baby.
Mark	14	Usually my parents told one of my brothers to change me, usually my older one, but they would sometimes check my diapers and change me on their own. They had fun because it gave them a chance to treat me like a baby. I got used to it eventually.

How did you feel when you were given more control and discretion, and more responsibility towards the handling of your diaper-wearing? What changes did you make from how others handled these matters?

soaker	--	I felt great that I had control of my diapering. I could now wear less diapers and not look as if I wore diapers.It ment more changes but that was better than everyone knowing you wore diapers.
Mike P.	60	I had mixed feelings. I knew that sooner or later this was something I was going to have to take care of on my own. Regardless of the circumstances, my mother was always very patient and understanding with me and I liked being changed by her. My caregivers at school were OK, but one of them scolded me one day after I had pooped myself. I didn't like being scolded for something I had no control over so I was glad when I began taking care of myself at school. But I always had a difficult time changing myself after a bowel movement. It was never fun (especially when it happened at school) but my mother still helped me at home for a long time .
