Mike P.	57	Before age 13 I went through two stages: I was changed by my mother and personal care providers at school up to beyond age 9; afterwards I began changing myself. I was probably changed every few hours both at home and at school, mostly to prevent being in a wet diaper for too long (to control my diaper rashes). When I started changing myself at school, I usually got changed right after getting to school, before and after lunch, and just before dismissal. On the weekends at home I got changed when I got up, once in the morning, twice in the afternoon, and before going to bed. Time since my last diaper change usually prompted my next change, except if I realized I had a bowel movement (I'm incontinent due to spina bifida).

At my day care i am changed by the child minder. Usually i get changed after i have peed or pooped in my diapers. At school i am changed at fixed times.

My diaper was changed when I woke up around 7 AM; between 10am and 10:30, I was checked and changed; After lunch around 1PM I was changed again so that I was dry for my nap. I was checked after my nap and changed if wet. If I wasn't I was checked again in about half an hour. So sometime between 2:30 and 3:30 I would have my afternoon change. I was checked and changed if necessary before dinner. If I did not need a change before dinner, I did after dinner. and was changed and put in my pajamas. If I was changed before dinner, my night time change and pajama's was closer to my going to sleep around 8:30pm. I was always checked before being put in bed. If I had been changed right after dinner, then I usually need another change before going to sleep. This general schedule was varied because I was often checked and changed if needed.

I took only four clean/dry diapers to school every day, so I could only get changed four times. After age 13 I changed myself less often for different reasons. At home if I need to be changed more oftn, it was OK.

Robby	47	I was always checked before a change, even when it was obvious I was going to need a change. When I was checked, I was always asked, "Are you wet?" or "Do you need a change?" My response was usually "no" because I did not want to be interrupted or changed. But my Mom wasn't really interested in my response. I think the question was more of a rhetorical question or her way of saying, "It's time for a change." In any event, she always checked and decided what to do. I was usually not happy about have to be changed, but was glad when it was over. Sometimes, especially when I had pooped, I did ask to be change. I would do this by going to my room and getting a clean diaper and bringing it to my mom.

Sometimes I was changed in front of everyone who there, particularly if my mom did not want to be interrupted when talking with her friends or we were watching television. Diapers and plastic pants were stored both in my room and in the TV room.

RJ	46	It just got so horrible and yucky after a while. I'd wake up soaked and not be changed until after breakfast and have to sit at the table like that. I'd hold my poop to try and make it close to a change, but often I couldn't manage it and end up sitting in it for hours, or be in bed like that if I didn't make it until morning. I'd get rashes and they'd itch or hurt bad. If things got really uncomfortable I'd try begging or pleading for an extra change but it didn't happen that often, and when it did I'd usually get spanked too. It was all part of the punishment.
