I was born with the birth defectspina bifidaand almost immediately my age, my mother was told that I probably couldn't be potty trained and that I would be incontinent. At age three I think my mother tried putting me on the toilet, but it soon became clear that I had no awareness of my bladder and bowel functions. I had no sensation of a full bladder, no sensation of peeing, no feeling of the need to poop, and no awareness of having a BM until the smell became obvious.

These were actually thick cotton training pants with no fly. If I had an accident, then I was put in a diaper for the rest of the day. I wore diapers at night until I was 6 so I was always put in a diaper after dinner. When dad got home and saw that I was still in my big boy underpants, he would comment that I had been a big boy. If I was in a diaper, he would comment about me getting to be too old for diapers and day time accidents.

ItsOnlyMe	35	I just never saw a point to it. It always seemed like such a waste of time to take minutes out of my busy schedule to spend on the toilet. My parents tried every reward conceivable to encourage me to choose the toilet over messing in my diaper, but never punished me when I decided not to. I knew at a very early age I could hold it until I made it to a potty, but it usually made more sense to just take care of business in my diaper and keep doing what I was already doing until I was finished and decided I needed a change. There were times I wasn't so preoccupied with more important things that using the toilet wasn't a distraction, so I'd stay clean and dry for a few days; my parents would give potty training another shot, but I'd usually get distracted again and go back to messing myself, and ultimately wind up back in diapers. They didn't consider it a failure, or declared I was untrainable, but rather that I just wasn't ready to succeed, and would decide on my own when I wanted to be potty trained.

A lot of people didn't understand my disability, and thought that neither my mother nor I were trying hard enough. At times it was also difficult for me to be around other (very young) kids who were toilet trained while I was still in diapers. It was always unplesant when I pooped myself or was noticeably wet to others.

Mike P.	57	It's strange to say this but at a very young age (3 - 5), I wasn't focused very much on the toilet. I can't say that I had much awareness about my bathroom functions except that I knew I wore diapers and had to be changed. When I started school at age 5, my mother began giving me nightly suppositories to "control" my BMs so I wouldn't have an "accident" in school with my bowel movements. After taking a suppository, I had to sit on the toilet until I had a BM and this was the first time I used the toilet. But except for my bowel program, I was always in diapers.

Diapers were simply more convenient than using the toilet.

ItsOnlyMe	35	Again, I thought nothing of it. The only difference was that it was easier to pull down training pants to use the potty than it was to untape a diaper, but whenever my parents put me in trainers for another potty training attempt, I could and would use the potty, so they were mostly pointless. Getting put back in diapers was mostly for convenience, really.

Mike P.	57	Up until age five I don't think I ever thought of being wet and/or soiled as being an "accident." I couldn't control my bowels and bladder and it was understandable when I was wet or soiled. When I began school, I was expected to stay clean, if not dry, and that's why I had to have suppositories so I wouldn't poop myself in school. Nevertheless, over time I did have BMs at school, and they were regarded as "accidents." Being wet was never thought of as an accident; it was more or less normal. (It was more problematic if I stayed dry between changes as it might have been an indication that my bladder wasn't emptying properly.)

My little sister and I actually wound up successfully potty trained at about the same time--she's 4 years younger--so it never crossed her mind that she was on a faster learning curve in that regard.
