This occurred sometime in either Spring/Summer of 2004. I was watching
my then stepson (who was 5 at the time) for the night, his mom was out.
As usual, he was in a diaper for the evening since he was a bedwetter.
Though he usually wore Pampers Cruisers Size 5's (he was small for his
age, only weighed about 32 lbs) that night he was wearing a Luvs Size
6. I also remember that he had a pair of pj shorts and pj shirt that
had Spongebob playing soccer on them. Aside from bedwetting, he had
what I feel were constipation issues; it was normal for him to poop
maybe once or twice a week, which I think contributed to his
bedwetting. Around the time of this "sighting", he had been making
excuses to extend his bedtime, after he was already in a diaper, by
saying that he had to go potty, often that he had to poop. Then of
course, the diaper had to come off, and he wouldn't do anything for 20-
30 minutes. So, I had made the decision (and told him) that he was to
make sure to always try and go potty before his bath, because after his
bath, the diaper went on, and once the diaper was on, that was it-if he
needed to go potty, he could use the diaper, and I'd change him.
On this particular night, he was already in his diaper and jammies, and we were in his bedroom. I was reading Dr. Seuss's "The Lorax" to him, since he liked that book. I noticed he was fidgeting a lot that night, and I asked him what was wrong. He replied that he had to go potty, and started heading for the bathroom when I stopped him and reminded him of the rule, and told him if he needed to go, to just go ahead and use his diaper, and that I would change him. He persisted, saying he didn't need to pee, but to poop. I told him that was okay, he had a diaper on, and diapers were made for poop too, so he should just use the diaper. He whimpered and protested that he didn't want to use his diaper, but I insisted. At first, I thought he was just stalling again, and I wanted to call his bluff, though I admit, I wanted to see if he'd actually poop in his diaper. Sure enough, he squatted down and was grunting and pushing. It was clear that he was certainly trying to push a poop out, and it was going to be a large poop. When he saw me looking at him, he got upset and yelled for me to "not look" and retreated into his bed, which was really a waterproof toddler sized mattress inside a tent with blankets and pillows (he thought it was cool to sleep in an actual tent every night, lol). I gently encouraged him that it was okay to poopy in his diaper and to keep pushing, and pretended not to look while going back to reading the story. Of course, I was watching him the entire time. After a couple of minutes, he announced that he was "finished" and asked to be changed. Honestly, under his jammies, it was hard to tell if he had actually gone, as at first, there was very little smell. So I told him I wanted to give him a few more minutes to make sure he was done, and then I would change him. He started to cry at that, so I told him I would go ahead and change him, but I needed to check his diaper first and see how messy the diaper was. I pulled him close to me, and with his back to me, reached for the back of his pajama bottoms to pull them back to get a peek of any mess inside. He pulled away with a loud "noooo", very embarrassed by what he had done in his diaper. I told him to stop being silly; after all, I was going to see everything when I changed him. I pulled him close again but this time, did a sniff test, since I really couldn't tell if he had pooped up to that point, it just smelled like a bad fart. Once he was close enough to sniff however, there was no doubt, he was messy. I confirmed this by running my hand on the outside of his pj bottoms and could feel a rather large lump in the seat of his diaper. I asked if he felt better having pooped, but he just said that it "owied." Not wanting to risk getting poop on the floor of his bedroom, I told him I'd be right back, and got a towel from the bathroom and spread it out like a changing mat. Then I grabbed the changing supplies-the tub of Huggies wipes, Desitin, and another diaper. He was reluctant to lay down at first because he didn't want to squish the poop and wanted me to change him standing up, but I told him it would be too messy that way, but promised I would get him all cleaned up really fast, so he agreed to lay down. Once he lay down, I removed his pj bottoms. He still looked embarrassed and a little upset at this point, so I started to joke around and play with him a little. Once his jammie bottoms were off, the smell from the messy diaper was stronger, and it was very obvious now that there was a mess in that diaper. I asked him if he had to go peepee before I changed him, but he said no, so I untaped the diaper and pulled it down. Once I did so, I lifted his legs and pulled the messy diaper away from his bottom. This poop was HUGE! It was a solid lump, and about the size of a softball! Even for a 5 year old, it was obvious he hadn't pooped in days, and no wonder it "owied" him coming out! I put the dirty diaper aside, and holding his legs up with one hand, removed a couple of wipes from the container and set to work cleaning his messy bottom. Since the poop was solid, it only took about 2 wipes before he was all cleaned up. Next, I took the Desitin (which I used on him all the time anyway to prevent rashes or irritation from wet diapers) and applied a thick coating to his bottom, telling him it would make his bottom feel better. Then I taped up the new diaper and put his pj bottoms back on before flushing the poop and throwing out the used diaper. I believe this experience got my stepson used to messing his diaper, because there were several more occasions where he readily pooped in his diaper, without question or protest, after this. |
