In 1949 I was twelve years old and that summer I was a
patient in the hospital for two weeks with double
pneumonia and almost died. The only thing I really
remember from the first week is that I was in an oxygen
tent and at one time packed in ice, and I had a very high
fever. I do remember being naked all the time, getting a
shot in the butt all the time, and it seemed like every
time they came in it was to take my rectal temperature
and change the sheets. When my fever broke things were
different the second week. For one thing in the day time
I got to wear undershorts, even though I was constantly
taking them down so that they could "service me". That
first night of the second week, after visiting hours were
over, they came in and asked me to remove my underpants,
"....So we can get you ready for bed. To make sure that
you don't have any more accidents we are going to put you
in diapers for the night. Ok?" I lay stark naked on my
back, legs spread, knees bent and they put a cloth diaper
on me, with diaper pins and then rubber pants, just like
a little baby. I was woke up in the middle of the night
to be changed and have my temperature taken.
