NASCAR BABY written by Dale Elliott Brooks Chapter 1 Carter Sawyer, The 18 year old son of NASCAR racer Chris Sawyer, was nervous. As many times as Carter - along with his brothers and sister, been to DAYTONA, this was his dream, RACING in the DAYTONA 500. He looked around the pits of SAWYER-MARSDEN RACING TEAM listening his dad talk to the third team member, Darryl Dunaway, the dad of his girlfriend, Sue. Carter went over to his car and listened to his pit crew, who were checking over his car - the Pampers/Gerber Baby Food #73 Ford Taurus - before he got into the Taurus and started to his starting position -36th. Before he climbed into his car, his mom came over and wished him good luck. She then asked, "Are you okay? We don't want you to stop halfway though the race -." "Mom," Carter said, "Sue changed me in the Fleetwood 10 minutes ago. I'm just nervous because Of the history - and winners - of this place. Just think of the winners here, Bill Elliott, the Dale Earnhardts, Terry and Bobby LaBonte, The Pettys, A.J. Foyt and the Yarboughs. Now I'm going out and compete with Darryl and Dad and the NASCAR Stars of today." He climbed into the car and kissed his mom and then seeing Sue coming over kissed her. "See you at Victory Lane, I'm going to win." Then he started his car to get to his position. In the stands, Quincy Kee was sitting with his family with the scanner to listen to the racers chatting to their pit crew. His favorite racer was Chris Sawyer and was talking to his brother, who was looking at the starting line through the binoculars. Mike, his 13 year old brother, laughed. Mike handed him the binoculars, and said, "Look at the #73 car, Quincy. It is cool." Quincy looked at #73 and said, "Cool. Pampers and Gerbers! Do you think-." Mike said, "I doubt it. Hmm, #73 is driven by Carter Sawyer, the rookie son of Carter Sawyer. The sponsor is Pampers." Quincy said, "Why Pampers?" Mr Kee said, "Marketing. They do sponsor the Tide car, so why not Pampers." Soon, after the national anthem, the race started. --- Chapter 2 By the 25th lap, Carter was in 24th place. He was on the bumper of Haro Kalanjian, who was in 22nd place - the 23rd place car, Dwayne Sinclair was on his right trying to pass both Haro and the 21st place racer, Alex Turvey. Carter decided to back off, and went to the left of Haro. Soon, Dwayne bumped into Alex, which sent his car into Haro. Carter saw what happened, so he sped up to avoid the accident, which cause 7 cars - Alex, Haro, Dwayne along with Jason Dunston, Piet VandenBerg, Jason Thomas and Sean McKee - to be involved. Haro, who hit the wall then Jason Dunston's car - the #06 Dodge, was out of the race. Carter, saw the yellow flag, so he waited to go into the pits. He is now in 20th place, the best showing of the 5 rookies in the race. In the stands, Quincy and Mike were talking about if Carter was an AB. Quincy said, "Mike look at his sponsor - and I think you'd see that he is - CribNursery.com and Deeker.teenbaby.net. I think he is. It would be cool if he was an AB." Mike said, "I doubt it, Quincy. Look at the others SarparillaVille Restaurants, IBM, SNET and Hartford Wolfpack. I guess they decided to promote on Carter's car. He is good - he is now 18th after his pit stop." Mike was quiet for a moment and said, "Mom, I need to go to the Winnie." Quincy said, I do to, Mom. I wanted to watch Carter. That was a cool crash." In the pits, Carter's youngest brother, Elliott Ricky, who was 8, was playing in the Fleetwood in just a diaper. Elliott, who has, the same bladder problem as the Sawyer's men, had a cast on his leg - after crashing his go-kart in a race. Sue came into the Fleetwood and asked Elliott if he wanted to watch the race. He did so Sue changed him and put on his wind pants. Sue said, "Carter is doing good. So are our dads, yours is in 3rd place, mine is in 5th. Carter is in 17th." "I'm going to race with them soon! So is Dennis!" Elliott said. Dennis is Sue's brother and Elliott's best friend. Dennis on the go- kart circuit is named Dennis the Manace, while Elliott is called 'The Monster'. It is a family tradition to grow up in racing, even though they are from Connecticut - hardly a place for a SOUTHERN SPORT, like Nascar, to be popular. Elliott and Sue went up to watch the race with both their moms and Dennis. Chapter 3 During the yellow flag Chris Sawyer came into the pits to get four new tires and gas. He knew he would be either first, second or third if he had a great pit stop. His stop was 12.5 seconds, good enough to take the lead from Bill Barcroft, who was first, but his car stalled in pit row, so he fell to 11th. Carter, running in 20th position when he went to the pits, came out at 17th. His pit crew, from last year when he was racing three quarter midgets, got him out in 13.4 seconds. Now, waiting for the green flag, Carter was behind last year's rookie of the year, Jimmy Melville, who was in 16th place and Shawna Burns, who was in 15th place. Carter wanted to pass them, because he wants to get into the top 10. 'Don't force it,' he thought to himself. 'If you do, you might have an accident.' Carter was listening to his crew through the headphones, and when it said the green flag was coming out, Carter made sure he was on the front straightaway so he sped up, he passed Jimmy Melville, then he passed the pink and white 'Mattle Barbie' #53 Grand prix of Shawna to get into 15th place. Dennis and Elliott were in the pits and garage area of Sawyer- Marsden Racing Team. They were both dressed in diapers and wind pants. Elliott hobbling around on his crutches, so Dennis said, "Want to watch the race? I guess we should see if we can learn from the old pros." They walked over to where their moms were and sat down. Elliott looked at his mom and said, "How's dad, Darryl and Carter doing, mom?" "Your dad is in the lead, Darryl is 3rd and Carter is now 13th. He just passed Mark Desson and Chris Mansen. Are you guys ready for your racing season? Dennis, I've heard that your uncle and aunt just adopted again, this time twin boys. I wonder if they'll love racing." "I hope they'll be go-kart racing with us. Racing against Elliott is boring!" Dennis looked at Elliott and smiled. "I was a bit unsure of Xavier when he got adopted. I think he'll be better this year then last. Uncle Richard was working with him." "Denny, we are SUPPOSED to race against the other people, you goofball!" Elliott said while shaking a fist. Elliott gave him a hug. Elliott and Dennis do love each other, and when they are home - they live in Tilton, New Hampshire - they usually sleep over each other's houses. Elliott looked at Dennis and said, "I think the 'X man' is a great racer for his first year ever. Xav learned a lot last year." Quincy and Mike walked to the Winnie, which was in the INFIELD, to change. The boys were talking about Carter Sawyer and the 7 car crash. Mike said, "That was AWESOME. I can't believe these drivers, especially when that car flipped about 5 times. Think you want to race?" Quincy said, "I'll drive go-karts at the batting cages. I'm not going to drive those things. You got to be crazy!" He looked at his brother and smiled. Both of them love NASCAR racing, but they think that it would be impossible to be a NASCAR racer. Quincy said, "Want to change me, Mike? Mom and dad are over at the stands." Mike said, "Okay. I hope mom and dad won't miss us." He looked at Quincy and smiled while they went into the Winnie. Once inside, Mike changed himself, then started to baby Quincy. He was baby talking to Quincy while pulling off his pants, then he unsnapped the onesie and pulled down the yellow plastic pants with penguins on them. He looked at Quincy and kissed him, then untaped Quincy's diaper. Mike looked at Quincy's boy-tool, which was straight up, then said, "You love this, don't you? Why not get Wharton to change you? You know you want him to and mom and dad got to know sometimes. Besides, they know." "They know about you and Dave?" Quincy asked. "I guess I'm still not sure. I love Wharton, but maybe I'm straight. I look at boys, but - ." He stopped for awhile then said, "I hope Wharton is as mixed up as I am." Mike said, "Not about Dave, but they know I'm gay. I told them just before Christmas." Mike washed Quincy up, then diapered him and snapped the onesie and pulled up his pants. They went out of the Winnie, when a dirt bike zipped past them being chased by Dennis and Elliott. The dirt bike stopped and the rider flipped up the mask of his helmet. He said, "Sorry, for almost hitting you. Didn't realize that anyone was in there. Elliott, are you sure you want to chase me. Oh, by the way, I'm Kenric Dunaway and these are my brother Dennis and his friend, Elliott Sawyer." Mike looked at Quincy, then Mike said, "Dunaway? Sawyer? You are related to the drivers?" Kenric said, "Dennis and I are related to Darryl Dunaway. Elliott is related to Chris Sawyer, who is his dad and Carter Sawyer, who is his brother. Do you like racing?" Quincy said, "Nice to meet you! We are Mike and Quincy Kee. Like having your dad as NASCAR drivers? We love NASCAR racing." Mike said, "Nascar is fun, but do you guys like it? Elliott, did your dad force Carter to be -." Elliott interrupted him by saying, "Nope, we all love racing. Dennis and I race Go-karts, Carter races here after racing snowmobiles, go-karts quarter midgets, mods and last year he was the BUSCH NORTH ROOKIE. Kenric races dirt bikes and snowmobiles, Tim races Mods, Dale will be doing BUSCH NORTH, Scott races boats. We are a racing family. Even Dennis and Ken's uncle is into racing." T6Mike said, "What happen to your leg?" Elliott said, "Dennis the Menace." Elliott was pointing to Dennis. "Rammed into me. I broke my ankle. We both were passing two racers in our go karts, Dennis hit the wall then hit me. Dennis won the race, and I finished in third place." Mike and Quincy said, "Dennis the Menace?" They broke up laughing. They soon stopped and said, "Nice nickname, Dennis." Dennis said, "When I'm on the track, my hero is 'The INTIMIDATOR', the late Dale Earnhardt. The press started to call me Dennis the Menace, when someone said I was a menace. I don't mind, it gives us an advantage. Elliott and I are teammates, so we work together in the races. Why not hang out with us? We are going back to the pits." Mike and Quincy said, "Can we?"
Chapter 4 Back in the pits, Kenric, Dennis and Elliott were showing Mike and Quincy around. Mike and Quincy could believe the people who are there to help the team - besides the pit crew, the people you see during the races - there are still many you don't see. Mike and Quincy were being shown around and Kenric, Dennis or Elliott answered them. Mike said, "I guess you have school. I guess you can't be with your dads all the time. You have school right?" Kenric said, "We do have school, but our school is at home. Our parents are our teachers. When we are at home, we study for 4 hours a day, and on the road we study 5 hours, but Friday, Saturday and Sundays are our free-time. Even now, we are doing schoolwork - learning about engines and aerodynamics." Quincy looked at Mike and said, "Wow, do you miss going to school? I know I'd love being home schooled. No one would make fun of you. Do you have friends?" Elliott said, "Besides this nut?" He was pointing at Dennis. "Yes, I have some kids who live in Tilton, where we are from? My second best friend thinks it is cool racing go-karts. He would love to race against Dennis and me someday." Dennis said, "Who Elliott? Do you mean, Erwin? Erwin would love to try it, but his mom would have a bird!" Dennis looked at Mike and Quincy, then said, "Erwin has vision problems. He is LEGALLY blind, but he is competitive." Elliott said, "Almost LEGALLY blind, menace! He wishes he could race, but he can't. If you look at him his eyes goes all over the place. He can read, but the book has to be at his nose so he can see the words. D, did you read his e-mail from him? Wayne and Just e mailed me. Justin sent in a story for Deeker's." Mike and Quincy looked at each other, then Mike said, "Deeker's?" Dennis said, "It is a good site for boys wearing diapers! There are some -." Dennis was interrupted by Mike who said, "We know about Deeker's. We were surprised that you knew about it." Mike started to laugh and said, "Sorry, what is your favorite story there?" Before, they could answer, they heard an accident, so they went into the pit area. What they saw was 2 of the cars flipping and losing parts and 2 others in the wall of turn 4. A yellow flag came out, so soon - in the pits - it would be busy. Mike said, "Do you think they'll be ok?" Quincy and Mike looked at the two cars, one of Steve Play - a rookie and the other of Steve Isenberg, both upside down without both axels and other parts. "I mean their cars are totaled." Elliott said, "When your car is losing parts, you'll be fine. It is the small crashes that you should worry about. Dale Earnhardt, lost his life when he hit the wall, yet 5 laps before there was a 15 car pileup and nobody got seriously hurt." Mike pointed at Steve Play's car and said, "If I was him. I'd have peed my pants!" When he said that Quincy laughed. Dennis said, "Some racers do wear diapers. I mean lets say you are leading by .03 seconds and you have 5 laps to go - you are NOT going to stop to pee. That would be a sure loss. The headline would say, 'Dennis win when Elliott - leading the race - took a pee break. Eliott finished 17th.' Your sponsors would be upset." Elliott punched him and said, "I won't let you WIN because I need to pee." Ouincy said, "Never thought about it. I guess you really can't say, 'Stop the race, I need to pee.'" He smiled at Dennis and Elliott. Quincy said, "I bet you guys are close, even though you do argue." Elliott said, "We are teammates and buddies. We grew up racing BIG WHEELS together. We like racing."
