Mike's Summer Job ================= Kathy Huntsberger was at her desk worrying. She didn't know what to do with her son, Mike. Mike was basically a good boy, but with summer coming soon, she found out that the summer camp he was going to go to is CLOSED. As a single mom, she couldn't afford to spend the summer home with him and all the camps are filled. Anita Talbot, a coworker said, "Why not find him a job? Brett got a job for the summer." Kathy said, "Brock? He is only 9. What did you do? Tell people that he is a drawf?" "Nope," Anita said. "Look in the paper in the main section. If you can find it, you and I can discuss it." Kathy found the ad. It read: 'The LilDevil Baby Company needs testers 7-14 to test our new line of clothing. 12 weeks minimum 700/wk. Limited to 50 people. Call for information.' Kathy called the number and told the lady about Mike and wanted some information. The lady on the other end, Megan Concannon, told Kathy about the company and the products. "Also," added Megan, "Some of the boys might be in our on-line web site and in our magazine ads. If that happened, the amount per week goes to $1300 a week." Kathy made an appointment with Megan on Saturday morning. Tonight she was going to ask Mike if he would like to be in an ad. "Maybe diapers on him would keep him from getting into trouble. A day care center at the plant." Kathy at first was shocked about the clothes being tested was diapers, among other things. Kathy was upset that Mike's dad left as soon he Mike was 1. Kathy's parents helped out, but Kathy missed his childhood. That night, Kathy took Mike out to Burger King for dinner. Mike looked at his mom and said, "What's up?" Kathy said, "I got to ask you something. Would you like to make at least 300 dollars a week this summer, plus more if you are picked for an ad? It would be for 12 weeks, so you'll get 3600 dollars for just being a 10 year old." Mike said,"3600 dollars? Can I spend it the way I want to?" Kathy said, "I want you to keep at least 2900 saved." Kathy was going to save the other 700 dollars, but Mike didn't know. "If you want this job, Mike, I need to have you ready at 8 am on Saturday." Mike was thinking,'3600 dollars for being a 10 year old? I might like working.' He then said, "Okay, mom. I'll be ready for my job on Saturday." When Saturday came, Mike was dressed in a casual outfit. He was nervous, but his mom didn't say anything about the job for the past 3 days. They got into their Escort and drove down their tree-lined street. Soon, Mike saw the 'LilDevil Baby Company' sign when his mom pulled into the parking lot. Soon he saw 3 other boys walking across the parking lot with their parents. 1 was with his dad, the other was with their mom and dad. "Mom," Mike said, "Where are we going? Into that plant?" "Yes," his mom said. "Hurry up you don't want to miss out on 3600 dollars??" She got out of the car. Mike sighed and got out of the car.
