Teddy Baldwin’s Accident Summary: This is a story about a 12-year-old kid who gets hit by a car and has to wear diapers for the rest of his life. ======================================================================= Hi, I'm Teddy Baldwin and I'm 12 years old. I love to play basketball, soccer, football and ride my bike. Everyday I'd get up at 6:30 in the morning, and get ready for school. My usual routine take a bath, brush my teeth, comb my hair and get dressed. That morning at 7:45, I got on my bike, said goodbye to mom and dad and headed off to school. While on my way to school, a car came speeding by; then it happened; the thing that changed my life forever. I rode my bike across the street to my school, but before I got across another car came speeding by and *BAMM!* The car struck me and I was thrown ten feet. I was knocked unconscious. When I finally woke up I noticed I was in the hospital with my parents by my side. “What happened?” I asked. “You were in an accident, honey,” my mom said. “A car struck you while You were riding your bike across the street. And you landed ten feet from the point where you were struck.” “Mom?” I asked. “Can you help me to the restroom? I need to go very badly!” “Honey, there's no need for you to get up, and besides, you wouldn't be able to get up if you wanted to! So you are wearing a diaper for the restroom! Just use it and don't be ashamed you can't help it.” “I'm not wearing a diaper!” I opened up my hospital gown and to my surprise there it was, plain as day, the diaper just as she had told me about. I couldn't believe it. “Why do I have to wear a diaper, Mom?” “Well, the reason for the diaper is you damaged your bladder in the accident. The doctors say you will have to wear diapers for the rest of your life.” “What?! I can't wear diapers for the rest of my life! What about my friends and school and my basketball team?” “The diapers are the least of your problems right now. I have something even worse to tell you. You’re… you’re…” she said with tears in her eyes. “You’re paralyzed from the waist down. You'll have to be in a wheelchair for the rest of your life.” “A wheelchair! That means I can't ride my bike anymore or play on my basketball team.” “Well, yes, you won't be able to ride your bike anymore. But you still can play on your basketball team.” “No, I can't. How can I play basket ball while in a wheelchair?” “But yes you can! You truly can! There's a lot of people who are in wheelchairs that play basketball.” * * * * * Finally, I was allowed home after a month in the hospital. The doctor wheeled me out to our new van with a wheelchair lift. I was in the van in no time and I was glad, then mom got in started the van and drove off. Finally, after 15 minutes on the rode. We got home mom pulled into the driveway and parked the van. Then she came around and got me out and pushed me in the house. I was glad to be home. So were in the house, and mom pushes me into my room But I don't regonize it. “This isn't my room,” I said. “Yes it is.” “But what happened to my basketball wallpaper and my bed? And why is there a changing table in here?” “You’re going to have to be treated like a baby, so I decided to fix up your room like a nursery room.” My bed was replaced with a crib and I had a playpen in the living room. So now I have to eat out of a highchair and drink from a bottle and play in a playpen. So that's my story. I am now an official baby! My day now consists of eating, sleeping, wetting, messing in my diaper and eating from a highchair.
