THE STUDY Jim was a 16 year-old honor student who needed who needed a good summer job. The recent recession meant most places weren't hiring. His parents were going away for the summer and he decided he would rather stay at home and work for some spending cash for the next school year. Day after day as summer approached he checked with the local employment agency, only to hear that companies considered him too young for the few positions they had. His parents went ahead and left for their summer home, with Jim promising to join them if he wasn't hired soon. Finally, the agency called him and said there was an 8 week research study he could participate in for $800 dollars a week. They said the pay was high because project was a bit unusual and they had difficulty finding enough people. Every participant must stay 24 hours/day with the project and not reveal the data to anyone. Jim agreed to participate no matter what he had to do (he was desperate) and next week he was off to the research center. When he arrived he was ushered in to the office where one of the supervisors, Mr. Taft, described the study. The main part of the study was to examine patients with severe sleep disorders and study the impact of an experimental drug on the patients. The drug wasn't believed to affect normal people at all, so it shouldn't be dangerous. The drug was believed to help people with sleep disorders gradually overcome the problem. The dose of the drug is small and it gradually impacts the persons sleep so they eventually sleep through the night. The main goal of the study is to determine how well the drug works to help these people sleep. They also wished to monitor how deep the sleep of the patients becomes, since critics of the drug argue it puts people into too deep a sleep (such that they will have difficulty waking up in the middle of their sleep cycle, even if someone is trying to wake them). "It sounds like a neat project, but I don't have sleep problems" Jim said, "What will I do?" "You will have an important role in the study," Mr. Taft replied. "First, you will watch the data on the patients as they sleep. We don't watch the patients directly as they sleep, but we see their heart rate and brain waves on our office monitors. We will show you how to tell when they are sleeping and also when they are in an unusually deep form of sleep. When any of the patients drift into an unusually deep sleep, you will go in to periodically check up on them. You will go to their rooms and make sure they look comfortable and all the equipment is working properly. We need to know more about this deep sleep so we need to keep the patients dry and comfortable so they stay in this sleep mode as long as possible. You will also be cleaning them up if they are sweaty with a damp cloth, etc. There may also be times when a patient wets themselves in this very deep sleep. If they are wet you will clean them up and change them into an adult diaper. This won't be necessary with most of the patients, but we need to know how many patients experience this side-effect. I hope this work is O.K. with you, because you already signed on and we need somebody right now." "Well," Jim said, "I'm not sure what to think, but I need the work and for ten weeks I can do anything." "There is also a second aspect of the study you will be involved with as you sleep," Mr. Taft said. "The drug isn't believed to have much effect on people without sleeping problems, so you will take the drug before you go to bed every night. It may make you sleep a little bit better, but there is only a one-in ten chance you will go into the deep sleep we are concerned with. There is a one in a hundred chance you will wet yourself during sleep after a few weeks, but I wouldn't worry. We will monitor you just in case, along with many other people we have in our sample of normal sleep people." Jim agreed to start participating the next day, wondering how it would all turn out. The first couple of weeks of the study were largely uneventful, in large part because the drug takes several days at least to have any impact at all. The sleep problem patients were gradually starting to sleep better and Jim would go in and wash off their forehead and check the equipment when they slept a little deeper. He hadn't noticed any change in his sleep from the drug, other than not sleeping as well initially due to new surrounding. Finally, in the third week, some of the patients started to get into the very deep sleep the study was looking at. Jim went in to check one of the patients in this deep sleep and much to his surprise he found them soaked with urine. Thinking "how gross "he went to the supply closet to find a brief for the patient. He opened the closet containing the diapers for the first time and was amazed by the variety of products. As he grabbed one labeled an overnight brief and baby powder he felt a weird excited sensation that took him by surprise. Despite his strange feelings, he got back to his job and went back to the patient. He pulled off the patient's pajamas and underwear, rolling him to the side so he could change the bedding beneath him. As promised by the study leaders, the patient didn't wake up from this intense sleep. Jim winced at the smell of urine, but cleaned the male patient like a pro and proceeded to apply a baby wipe and powder. Jim felt himself getting excited in his loins and was amazed that the excitement grew as he put the patient into the diaper and taped it firmly to him. Embarrassed by his reaction to the diapering, Jim went back to work. During the next couple of weeks, Jim encountered several of the patients ( a significant minority) needing to be changed into fresh diapers during their sleep. He found his interest in the diapers growing as more patients started to need them. He used all the diapers available at the research center on the patients, from thin line Tranquility to Attends and Molicare overnight briefs. His own sleep was getting slowly better through time, which he attributed to the long work hours and relaxed atmosphere. One day during the fifth week Jim encountered something new. He went to check on Mr. Jones, a patient who was requiring a change during almost all of his deep sleep events. After entering Mr. Jones room with a fresh Molicare diaper and powder, he proceeded to pull off the covers and was then surprised by what he saw. The current diaper was soaked as usual, but there was the obvious presence of a significant erection. Jim assumed this would go away and took off his diaper and started to clean him up. As soon as he started his work, Mr. Jones' erection grew impressively until his penis stood straight up. Jim was amazed not only by this but by his own reaction. He knew he wasn't remotely close to being gay, and yet he grew highly aroused himself as he powdered the erect penis, waiting for it to subdue. After waiting several minutes, Jim decided he needed to do something and forced the erect penis into the diaper and then taped it shut. Seeing the erection popping up the diaper, he knew it would leak badly if he left it like this. Without thinking, Jim put his hand on the outside of the diaper and messaged and stroked the diaper until Mr. Jones came with a quiet groan. After re-taping the diaper, he left the room with his heart racing and his mind wondering why he got so excited by the episode. For a few nights Jim didn't sleep that well, perhaps due to his lying awake and thinking about his joy at changing all these diapers. Finally, he slept fine again and eventually he was sleeping like a baby, better than he had in years. Then one morning, we woke up with a big surprise. He was wet! Not just a little wet, but soaked badly. He was quite embarrassed at this development and didn't tell his superiors. The next night two nights he was dry and he figured it was just a fluke. Finally, he wet the bed again three nights in a row, even after cutting down his liquid intake. Embarrassed, he told Mr. Taft what was occurring. "Wow! I guess you are that one-in-a-hundred in the normal sleep population. Please keep taking the drug and see how it progresses. To keep yourself dry at night, use the diapers you use for the sleep problem group." Jim was embarrassed as he went to bed that night, but nonetheless brought a Molicare brief into his room with him. After deftly putting on the diaper, he was amazed at the sensation. He simultaneously felt comfort and arousal and also embarrassment at his reaction. Laying in thick, diapered confusion, he drifted to sleep. The next morning he awoke in a soaked diaper but a dry bed. He was somehow surprised at how comfortable he was, and stayed in bed for awhile enjoying the feeling of being in wet diapers. Over the next weeks, he wore diapers every night, trying them all out and wetting more and more thoroughly. He finally decided to wear them during the day while he worked. After a few hours he had to go badly, right as he changed another patient. As he powdered the patient, he flooded his diaper with warm urine. The sensation was phenomenal as he wet himself on purpose for the first time. He wasn't sure why he started wetting at night, and here he was wetting on purpose. He felt a little shame at his behavior, but couldn't stop. Finally the study ended. Jim was pleased at the money he had earned, but he looked forward to getting back to a normal life. It seemed strange that he wouldn't be taking the drug anymore. In their final meeting, he asked Mr. Taft how the study went overall, and whether he should be concerned about his new-found bed wetting. With some anxiety, Jim asked "How long will the wetting at night last? It is over now, isn't it?" "Don't worry about the incontinence, Jim. Now that you are off the drug it will subside pretty quickly. Please take along a supply of diapers for night and let us know how long you wet at night. It may take 1 night or a month, we really aren't sure. It is important for us to know how long the effect lasts." As the days went on, Jim secured some job interviews and continued with his life. Unfortunately, he continued to wet the bed for a solid month after the project ended. He liked the feel of the diapers at night considerably, but he was concerned and embarrassed that it was continuing. Finally, he went for a scheduled meeting with Mr. Taft. "You are still wetting the bed?" Mr., Taft said. "Yes," Jim replied, "every night." "Well, Jim, there is something I need to tell you." Mr. Taft went on, "The reason you were paid so well for simple work is that we had to mislead you about the project. The patients you were tending were actually infantilists, who wanted to wet themselves at night. The drug helped some of them achieve their goal of wetting in their sleep, and having someone tend them was part of what they paid for. Furthermore, the drug you were taking at night was actually a placebo, with no physical impact. We only had you take them to make the study sound more legit. The reason you started to wet the bed, and the reason you are still wetting the bed is that you subconsciously want to wear diapers. It is the only explanation for your behavior, and I suspected it was occurring before the study ended." Shocked, and oddly pleased, Jim replied "Why do you think that?" "Because," Mr. Taft responded, "there isn't a better explanation and it looked like you were wearing diapers during the day on several occasions. Am I right?" Shocked at his own realization, he told Mr. Taft he was probably right. Jim went home, did some thinking, and tried to put everything in perspective. Finally, after hours of reflection, he put on a diaper. He wasn't sure why he liked to wear diapers, but he couldn't help it. He only had a couple more weeks in diapers before his parents returned home. Then he was out of diapers, at least for a while.......
