The Story of David Mayter (2004)
Entry 06: Following the Trail
“I cannot believe
it…Sven has turned into a total and complete asshole… We went on a hike today,
as preplanned since yesterday’s sleepover. We were in the woods near mine and
Will’s old clubhouse…which was bringing some old memories back.. Anyways, so we
were hiking along a trail…”
”Are we lost?” Jason asked. He was walking in the middle, between David and
Sven.
“Of course not…I’ve got these woods memorized off by heart. It’s only around the corner, and then we reach a steep hill. Travel up it; go a little over flat land, and we’ll be there” David explained.
“Are you sure, it’s been a little while…” Jason said, careful with his words.
“Yeah, I’m sure…traveled it quite a few times…just trust me!” David said.
“…I wouldn’t trust him too much…” Sven remarked, quietly.
“…what?” David and Jason asked at about the same time.
“…nothing…” Sven said.
David was pretty sure of what he heard; he just wanted to confirm it. Sven and David didn’t too much after that, not to insinuate that Jason did either. But the silence was so strange that even Jason noticed it.
“What’s up with you guys?” he asked, breaking the silence as the three walked along the trail.
“Nothing” David said. Sven was still silent, though.
“Um…okay…well, we’re here anyways. Time to climb up, up, up!” Jason said, livening things up a little.
David and Sven looked up at what Jason was talking about. There it was, the hill they were talking about….though it wasn’t too much of a hill…more like a cliff, to be honest. It was a very steep, very bare hill. Trees that used to be on it now laid at the bottom, most broken in half from the fall. The hill was mostly dirt and rock, with some patches of grass every so often.
“Were those trees…on the hill?” Jason asked.
“Yeah…don’t know how though. I guess that’s why they aren’t on there anymore.” David said.
So with that, they began climbing the hill. It took them about 20 minutes to do so, but it wasn’t too bad of a climb. David and Sven had it memorized, but Jason had a lot of difficulty climbing the hill, since he never went to the clubhouse before. But no doubt, he did get to the top. David, Sven, and Jason all walked on the top for a bit. The walked away from the hill for about 10 minutes, until eventually…
“I have to piss” Jason said, walking over to a nearby tree.
“So do I” Sven said.
“…um…have fun!” David said sarcastically.
”You should give it a try sometime, you know, without a diaper on” Sven
ignorantly remarked as he stood in front of a tree.
“…what?” David asked, faking a confused face. Truthfully, he was actually extremely nervous, and the second the word ‘diaper’ was used, his heart sunk into his chest.
“You know what I mean. Ever notice how David never goes to the bathroom?” Sven said.
“Um…no?” Jason said, confused.
“Well I did” Sven said.
“…um…congratulations. I wasn’t aware you were gay,” David said.
“I’m not gay” Sven said.
“Well, you know, you monitoring my bathroom visits sure doesn’t sound too heterosexual” David explained.
Sven was dumbfounded, angry, and conquered by David’s words.
”Yeah, well you better shut up; I know things about you…” Sven maliciously
said, threatening David.
”I’d certainly hope so, it’d be strange if you knew only how often I go to the
bathroom” David said, starting to laugh half way through.
“Um…so…how are you two doing?” Jason asked, confused.
“Perfectly fucking DANDY” Sven said, zipping up his fly and continuing on towards the clubhouse, which could be seen very vaguely in the distance.
“I don’t exactly understand what the hell his problem is” David said to Jason.
“Yeah, I noticed he’s been weird since like, yesterday, whenever he found the stuff in your room” Jason explained. David just shrugged.
---
It was a short walk from where Sven and David argued briefly, to the clubhouse in the distance. It was old, rickety, and abandoned…but to David, it was just like he remembered it. There was really nothing in it, it was just a big empty room with two windows built into the walls, but it was still decent. It was rain-resistant, surprisingly.
“How the heck did you guys build this?” Jason asked.
”Me and Will found this abandoned, basically the same way it is now” David
explained.
The three sat down, and began to make conversation. But in time, the subject became of William himself…
“…so David…is it okay if we talk about…Will?” Jason asked, being very cautious.
“Yeah…I’d actually like to” David said.
“Does anyone know how he…died?” Jason asked.
“I don’t…” Sven said.
“…nope…” David said.
“But I do know a lot about how he lived…I’ve been reading
his journals more often” David said.
”Really?” Jason asked.
“Yeah…” David said.
“How come?” Jason asked.
“I don’t know, honestly…I just kind of found them one
day…something possessed me to start reading them. I guess since it’s almost his
birthday” David admitted.
”Yeah…I mean, you two were the closest of friends…” Jason said.
“Yeah, at least I had one good friend” David said, looking and snarling at Sven, who was plumped in the corner. Then he looked back to Jason.
“…not that you aren’t” David said not to offend Jason. Jason laughed.
”I knew what you meant,” Jason admitted.
“But anyways…doesn’t anyone find it weird that no one knew how he passed on? I mean, it was so sudden, and so mysterious. All of the sudden, he was gone, with no explanation” David said.
“Yeah…I have to agree. But honestly, I don’t want to know. Maybe our parents or just his didn’t want us to know” Jason said.
“I guess…but if that’s the case, I’m kind of mad. I mean, he was our friend. He was my best and longest friend, I think I have a right to know how he passed on” David said.
“Yeah, I do agree. But right now, I think I have to go” Jason said.
“Yeah, we should go. It’s about a half-hour from home, and it’s getting dark” David said, peaking out one of the windows.
All three of them got up, and left the clubhouse. After a quick descent down the hill, they began climbing down the hill. They continued to talk about William. Nothing bad, just all of the good times…
---
“Like I said, Sven is
being a serious asshole lately. I really am confused about him…but it really
makes me angry that he doesn’t believe that I’m really incontinent. That’s just
ignorant. But anyways…yeah…I guess I won’t be hanging with him for a little while.
I guess I’ll get more of the story done now.”
