By age three my parents were fully aware of my spina bifida and the fact that I probably would never become reliably toilet trained. My mother changed me from birth until late adolescence/early adulthood. Even though I began changing myself when I was nine, there were still times when I wanted/needed her help in the bathroom. Probably by age three I was more fully aware the I needed diapers and had to be changed and by age five when I started school, and my sister was three, I became moree fully aware of the fact that I was different because I was still in diapers.

I was only wet and a quick change was all that it took after a wipe down with a face cloth, no wipes just a face cloth. I had the same plastic pants put back on, which were a bit moist. That was all and I was patted on the butt and sent back to play.

		Mom really didn't begin to make a bg deal out of my diaper wearing until I turned four. I was potty trained during the day just before I was three, but still wet the bed so mom keep me in diapers. After a while she begin treating me more like a baby and even keeping me in diapers during the day when I did need them. I remeber other kids my age that didn't need diapers making fun of me because of my cloth diapers and plastic pants.

		Memory really doesn't go much earlier than age 8, but I was a chronic Bedwetter and remember my mom trying everything to get me to stop and then one night showed up with a very thick cotton pull-on style diaper pant which she had me step into and then she pulled out a pair of clear but noisy plastic pants (like gerber) and had me step into those which she put overtop the cloth diapers. She then told me that I would be wearing these to bed each night until I stopped bedwettting. The bedwetting persisted until age 14.

DiaperDon	36	When I was about 5, the family was going camping at a family reunion. Mom bought disposable diapers, so she wouldn't have to worry about cleanup and taking home my wet diaper pants. I was not aware of the disposable diapers until it was time to get ready for bed at camp. The whole family (Mom, Dad, 3 Brothers, 1 Sister, and Me) was in the tent getting ready for bed. Mom pulled out the disposable diapers, and told me to lay down and get ready for a diaper change. I was upset that I had to wear a 'baby' diaper, and that I had to get changed in-front of the whole family. I didn't really have any choice in the matter, so I did as I was told. I don't remember a conscious liking of the diapers at the time, but I do remember the different feeling from the cloth training pants I usually wore. I also remember waking up in the wet diaper. It was wet, but I didn't feel so wet as I normally did in the cloth training pants. I think I was just too upset at the time to realize I was enjoying the diapers.
		Once I pooped my pants walking home from school and I didn't think anyone was home when I proceeded to go into my house. Little did I know that my mother was home, saw and smelled the dump that was bulging from the seat of my pants. She took me by the hand to the bathroom and proceeded to treat me like I was a 2 yr. old. She stripped me down, made me clean out my dirty underpants in the toilet, gave me a very "rough" bath and then took me to my room and gave me one heck of a spanking, had me stand in the corner, lectured me, and then diapered me with cloth diapers and plastic pants. Since this all happened on a friday afternoon,I was punished the entire weekend with diapers and plastic pants. Very embarrassing for someone who was 14 at the time!

Roger		I think I was about 7 and I was a heavy wetter and we had been to the beach for the day and I had a lot to drink and mom put me into a triple diaper to make sure things stayed dry after the wetting. She spent a little time getting them folded to her liking to make sure the padding was in the right place. After the rubber pants were on I stood up and I felt all the padding between my legs, I looked in the mirror and my rubber pants were stretched out over the diapers.

		Don't remeber much about toilet training other that the fact I was afraid I would fall in and be suck away, but caught on pretty fast and was out of those "dirty diapers" as mom would put it in a few weeks. However, nighttime diapers would last until I was almost 12.

Ken		Diapers were for bedwetting or long car trips. Most awful was on an airplane flight to Hawaii and my mom thought I might leak-the airplane bathroom was small ans it was wierd going in together (I was about eight at the time). It was embarrassing that the pretty stewardess knew!

Chris	17	I don't mind when she changes me. It feels like being a child again.
		There wasn't really much I could do about it and I wanted to stop, but soon with along it. As I got older, I hated feeling and being treated like a baby. I never had friends over in fear of seeing my "baby things" (diapers and plastic pants on top my my dresser, the diaper rash creme, baby powder and lotion on my nightstand next to my bed, and worst the diaper pail with my smelling wet nightly diapers in it). Sometime around the age of 7 or so, I begin playing with myself i which I started liking the fact I wore diapers. As I got older I hated when anyone else (Grandma, aunts, cousins or other baby-sitters) but there again my feelings for diaper where getting very stong.
		I liked it.
		I started becoming very self conscious of having to wear the diaper pants and the noisy plastic pants to bed around age 9 onward. I had two older sisters who knew all about my bedwetting and the diapers mom put me back in at nite. My sisters luved teasing me about it and would make me go into my bedwetter diapers earlier than usual on those nights my parents put them in charge as babysitters.

		No brothers, but had a plenty of cousins. If they were babies Mom would check my yonger cousins who were still in diapers. I never wet or messed my diapers during the day or if I did would get a spanking with the paddle or worse the belt. Instead I would have to go get Mom and have her take my diapers and plastic pants off then be led to the potty. Then I would be taken back and rediapered. It didn't matter who was around. All of my relatives knew why I was still wearing diapers and plastic baby pants.

Chris	17	At first it was to embarass me, then it was because she needed the help.
		The entire family knew I was just a "big baby". One summer I had to stay with my Aunt when I was about six for some reason. My Aunt stayed home with my baby cousin was three and still in diapers all the time so she just kept in in diapers all the time too. I ate in a high-chair and slept in a crib. Unlike my Mom she wouldn't take my diapers off so I could use the potty but instead have me stand in font of her to wet and mess myself then make fun of me for doing so. She would love to take me out in public a with a full belly and wait until I wet and messed myslef for all to see what a bib baby I was. After several weeks she "re-potty trained" me, and potty trained my cousin. After my cousin was dry at night and didn't need nighttime diapers, after my Aunt diapered me in front of him he would call me a baby and my Aunt just loved it. She would just say "yes, Steven is just a big baby".
		She couldn't always do it.
		When left for babysitting nights, my sisters were instructed to make sure I wore my bedwetting diapers to bed. As I got older, I really started to resist being put into plastic baby pants....the noisy plastics were very uncomfortable to wear especially on very hot summer nights and the noisy pants kept me continually reminded that I was a Bedwetter.

		my mom is still against me wearing diapers to this day. even though she diaproves of it she is still willing to change me if i need it. She accepts the fact that i choice to wear them but she doesnt understand why. When we are out in town she always looks at me like she is wondering if i am wearing my diaper or not.
Mike P.	56	My mother understood and became well educated about spina bifida. In the 50's and 60's there was very litte that was done medically to deal with the continence issues and so I, and others like me, just wore diapers. I think my mother had always hoped a time would come when I wouldn't need diapers. In my early adulthood there was a time when it was thought that I might be able to use an external catheter and a leg bag for my urine, and learn to better manage my bowels, and hence not need diapers. But for reasons I can't discuss here, I couldn't make these alternatives work.

Roger		Mom and dad decided that being a bedwetter diapers for me would be used to keep the bed and mattress from getting ruined. From time to time we would talk about my bedwetting and that they wanted to make sure I was okay wearing diapers and that they were not punishing me by having me wear them to bed. These talks happened mostly in the evening before bed and I had the diapers and rubber pants on.

		Mom exlained that I was just a "big baby" who couldn't keep his bed dry. So if I was going to act like baby I would be treated like one as much as possible no matter when we went. Mom tried a little harder to keep it a "family secert" as I got older since I guess it look more like a failure on her part. Mom would hang diapers and my plastic pants in our basement instead of outside on the cloths line when I was yonger. Still there was obvious signs there was a baby in the house, so I never had any friends come over and I didn't do sleep overs. Mom's "baby training" never did work and as I got older she stoppoed with the babying so much but kept me in diapers and plastic pants making it vey clear I would wear my "baby thinngs" every night until I stopped wetting the bed. I wore night time diapers until I was almost 12 when I finally stopped wetting the bed.
		She didn't care.
		It was like a last resort I think. Since all other efforts to get bedwetting under control didn't work. Because I resisted the plastic pants so much, when I was a 12 yr. old the nite diapers diappeared and I ended up bedwetting the bed for another 2 years...full wet beds which were never fun in the morning to deal with. Guess mom thought I might become drier faster at night if I had to deal with the wet sheets for awhile.
